As of today, Wednesday, 8th January 2025, a significant change is set to impact the travel plans of eligible non-European national visitors to our region. This update comes in the form of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement. This development is part of an ongoing effort to enhance UK border security and streamline the entry process for international travellers.
The introduction of the ETA requirement means that eligible non-European national visitors will need to obtain this authorisation prior to their journey. This applies to various countries whose nationals may currently visit the UK for up to 6-months without applying for a visa and aims to ensure a smoother and more secure entry process. The ETA system is designed to gather essential information about travellers, allowing for pre-screening and enabling authorities to make more informed decisions about who is entering the country.
Who Currently Needs an ETA?
The ETA requirement is specifically targeted at non-European national visitors who do not currently need a visa to enter the UK. This includes tourists, business travellers, and individuals visiting family or friends. It’s important to note that this requirement is in addition to any existing visa requirements for those who already need one.
How to Apply for an ETA
The application process for an ETA is straightforward and user-friendly. Eligible visitors can apply online through the designated government portal. The form will require basic personal information, passport details, and travel itinerary. It’s advisable to complete the application well in advance of the travel date to avoid any last-minute complications.
Processing Times and Fees
Once the application is submitted, processing times may vary, but the aim is to provide a quick turnaround. Most applicants can expect to receive their ETA within a few days. There is a nominal fee of £10 associated with the application, which covers the administrative costs of processing. Everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. To assist in this requirement you can apply on behalf of other people. If you need to travel soon you must still apply for an ETA before you travel to the UK. You can travel to the UK while waiting for a decision.
What happens after applying?
You will get an email confirming you have got an ETA. It will be linked to the passport you applied with. Your ETA lasts for 2 years. You can travel to the UK as many times as you want during that time. If you get a new passport, you will need to get a new ETA. It is important to remember that an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. You still need to follow the correct procedure once you arrive at your UK port of entry, either: see a Border Force officer or use an ePassport gate, if you are eligible
