The Impact of Immigration on the UK economy

Mar 26, 2025

Immigration has long been a topic of debate in the UK, with discussions often focusing on its economic implications. However, the positive impact of immigrants on the UK economy is undeniable. From filling labour shortages to driving innovation and entrepreneurship, immigrants contribute significantly to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

Filling labour shortages

Immigrants play a crucial role in filling labour shortage, particularly in industries that struggle to find enough workers locally. For instance, The National Health Service (NHS), hospitality, construction and technology/IT sectors rely heavily on immigrant labour in order to meet their workforce needs. This ensures essential services are available to the public as well as maintaining productivity.

Innovation and productivity

Immigrants bring diverse skills and perspectives to the labour market, they can increase innovation and productivity as well as having more creative solutions and advancements. Studies have shown that immigration boosts innovation, enhances occupational specialisation and improves the matching of skills with jobs which in turn leads to higher overall economic productivity.

Overcoming adversity

All migrant workers who come to the UK have to overcome some challenges on their journey in order to settle in the UK. These may include language barriers; recognition of qualifications; employment or housing challenges and cultural adjustment.

Success stories

Immigrants are often highly entrepreneurial, launching new businesses at a higher rate than native-born citizens. For example here are some success stories

Sir Anwar Pervez, who immigrated from Pakistan, founded Bestway Group which is one of the largest privately-owned companies in the UK.

Kamal Basran OBE, originally from India, established the Authentic Food Company, which is now a major player in the food industry. She remains a non-executive director having handed the reins over to her son.

Atul Kochar, originally from India has opened several very successful restaurants, many located in London with others in Buckinghamshire and Kent and owns the first UK Indian restaurant to receive a Michelin star. He now mentors young aspiring chefs through online
sessions and interactive classes.

Hiroki Takeuchi, was originally from Japan and co-founded GoCardless in 2011. GoCardless is a fintech company which simplifies direct debit payments and has grown into a global operation, this is despite him suffering a serious life changing road accident in 2016 which
left him paralysed below the chest.

These are just a few of the inspiring and successful immigrants who have chosen to come to the UK. All of the above stories showcase their tenacity and strength to achieve and be successful in their chosen field.

Latest immigration statistics (Home Office, 2024)

In 2024 there are approximately 132.3 million arrivals to the UK of which the majority (55%) were British nationals. Of the non-British nationals, most were short-term visitors with small numbers arriving for work, study, family or humanitarian reasons.

In 2024 there were 210,098 visas granted to main applications in all work capacities, 37% fewer than the previous year, but 59% higher than in 2019.

The number of grants to main applications on other routes to the ‘Worker’ category, (which includes ‘Skilled Worker’ visas) in 2024 has fallen by 11% compared to the previous year.

There were 417,000 grants of an extension for work to main applicants, nearly seven times the number in 2019, primarily driven by the ‘Graduate’, ‘Health & Care Worker’ and the ‘Skilled Worker’.

Below is a graph showing the monthly applications for ‘Skilled Worker’ and ‘Health & Care Worker’ visas, covering the three year period from January 2022 to January 2025.

Work Visa Applications

The above graph shows that the monthly number of Skilled Worker visa applications from main applicants had been broadly stable between January 2022 to March 2024 at around 6,000 applications per month. Although there was a spike in applications in March/April 2024 to 10,100, mainly thought to be due to the changes in the UK’s immigration policies, specifically the increase to the minimum salary threshold to £38,700, however, this returned
to average levels the following months.

The latest figures for January 2025 show that there were 4,000 applications. Overall there have been 54,900 applications for Skilled Worker visas from main applicants between April 2024 and January 2025 and this equates to a 10% reduction in numbers compared to the same 10 months the previous year.

The financial impact

The financial impact of immigration on the UK public finances is generally positive, although it does vary on the characteristics of the migrant, such as their age, skills and earnings.

Studies have indicated that migrants typically contribute more in taxes than they receive in benefits thus resulting in a net positive impact on public finances. Migrants are often of working age which means they contribute to the economy through payment of taxes and National Insurance contributions whilst using fewer public services. Skilled workers tend to have a more positive fiscal impact due to their higher earnings.

In conclusion

Immigration has a profound and positive impact on the UK economy. Immigrants play a vital role in filling labour shortages, particularly in essential sectors such as the NHS, hospitality, construction and technology. Their diverse skills and perspectives drive innovation and productivity, leading to higher economic output.

Despite facing some challenges, immigrants demonstrate remarkable resilience and contribute significantly to the growth of the UK. By highlighting the spirit and determination of immigrants who have achieved great success it shows that anything is possible with the right attitude.

Overall, immigration not only helps to address the shortages in labour and boosts innovation but also strengthens the UK public finances, making it an indispensable component of the nation’s economic and social fabric.
