Skilled Worker Minimum Salary Threshold

Mar 15, 2024

Skilled Worker Minimum Salary Threshold

There’s been a lot of talk about the increased salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa, jumping to £38,700. But what if you’re already here on a Skilled Worker visa? Here’s some good news:

The new salary requirement won’t affect you!

That’s right, if you had a Skilled Worker visa before April 4th, 2024, you won’t need to meet the new £38,700 threshold when changing jobs, extending your visa, or applying for settlement. You’ll only need to meet a salary of £29,000, which takes inflation into account.

Important Dates to Remember:

  • The new £38,700 threshold comes into effect on April 4th, 2024.
  • You have until April 4th, 2030 to extend your visa or apply for settlement under the old £29,000 threshold (adjusted for inflation).

Changes to Going Rates for Specific Jobs:

The minimum salary for sponsoring someone on a Skilled Worker visa in certain professions is also increasing. These “going rates” are now based on the UK median salary for that specific job. For example, sponsoring a foreign accountant will now require a minimum salary of £46,800, up from the previous £31,300.

Exceptions for New Entrants:

There are still some exceptions for “new entrants” to the job market, like recent graduates under 26 and post-doctoral researchers. These individuals may be eligible for a sponsored visa even if their salary is slightly lower than the minimum threshold. However, with the new Immigration Salary List replacing the Shortage Occupation List, there will be fewer jobs overall that qualify for this exception.
