Navigating the gov.uk website: A tale of persistence and triumph

Liz Roberts, Executive Support at The Visa Office

Recently, Liz Roberts found herself in a battle of wits with the gov.uk website while trying to apply for Skilled Worker visas for a client and their dependents. What should have been a straightforward process turned into a series of frustrating hurdles.

The Initial Struggle

It all started with the simplest of issues: I couldn’t even log in. After overcoming that minor setback, I thought I was in the clear. But no, the website had other plans. Midway through the application, I was greeted with the dreaded message: “There’s a problem with this service at the moment. Try again later.”

The Search for Help

Naturally, I scoured the website for an email address or a help request form. Clicking on “there’s a problem with this page” led nowhere. With clients relying on me, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Troubleshooting 101

First, I tried the classic reboot—turning everything off and back on again. No luck. Next, I switched browsers, trying both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Still nothing. Determined, I delved into the security settings, clearing my search history, cookies, and cache. Finally, success! It worked on Microsoft Edge. Feeling a bit smug, I started the application for the skilled worker’s wife.

The Rollercoaster Continues

Buoyed by my success, I moved on to the child’s application. But my confidence was short-lived. Once again, the dreaded message appeared. Not one to be defeated, I repeated my cookie-clearing ritual. Success again! I managed to start the child’s application.

Lessons Learned

This experience taught me a few valuable lessons about dealing with finicky websites:

  1. Try Incognito Mode: Sometimes, a private browsing window can bypass issues caused by cookies and cache.
  2. Check for Updates: Ensure your browsers are up to date to avoid compatibility issues.
  3. Use a Different Device: If possible, try accessing the site from a different computer or mobile device.
  4. Contact Support: Although it can be challenging to find contact information, reaching out via social media channels like Twitter can sometimes yield quicker responses.

Final Thoughts

Navigating the gov.uk website was a test of patience and persistence. While it was frustrating, the satisfaction of finally getting through was worth it. If you’re facing similar issues, I hope these tips help you overcome them. And remember, sometimes a bit of persistence is all you need to beat the system!
